Blackjack is a casino card game where you compete against the dealer, not against the other players at the table. The goal is to finish with a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Going over is a bust, and a bust loses the bet automatically no matter what the dealer does afterwards.

Card values are simple and never change. Cards two through ten count as their face value. Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 10. An Ace counts as either 1 or 11, whichever helps your hand — which is why a hand containing an Ace being counted as 11 is called a soft hand: it cannot bust on the next card.

You win a hand in one of two ways: by holding a total closer to 21 than the dealer at showdown, or by the dealer busting with a total above 21. Those are the only two routes, and the second one is the reason a lot of correct play involves standing on a mediocre total and letting the dealer take the risk.

A natural blackjack is an Ace paired with any 10-value card as your first two cards. It usually pays 3 to 2, which is better than the even money a standard win pays, and it beats a 21 assembled from three or more cards. The exact payout belongs to the table, so read the info screen rather than assuming.

Once the cards are dealt, the decisions are yours. Every live blackjack table gives you the same core set:

• Hit — request another card to increase your hand total. You can keep hitting until you stand or bust.
• Stand — keep your current hand and end your turn without taking another card.
• Double down — double your original bet and receive exactly one more card. One card only, then your turn is over.
• Split — if your first two cards are the same value, separate them into two hands and place an additional bet matching the first. Each hand is then played out on its own.

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal way to play each of those decisions given your total and the dealer's visible card. It is not a system for beating the game; it is a way of not giving away more edge than the rules already take. The house edge in blackjack typically runs between 0.5% and 2% depending on the table rules and how well you play, which makes it one of the narrower margins on the floor — but it is still a margin, and it applies over the long run rather than to any single hand.

The dealer has no choices. In most casinos the dealer must hit until reaching 17 and must stand on 17 or higher, with the exact threshold and the treatment of a soft 17 set by the table rules. That fixed behaviour is what makes basic strategy possible: you always know how the dealer will play out their hand, so your decision reduces to a probability question you can answer.

Dealing order varies by variant. In European blackjack, for example, the dealer takes their second card only after the players have completed their turns, which changes the correct play in certain spots. This is another reason to open the info screen: the same word on two tiles does not guarantee the same rule set underneath.

Live blackjack tables are dealt from different numbers of decks, and the count is part of the table's identity:

• Single deck — one standard 52-card deck. Fewer decks slightly improve the player's odds, because card probabilities shift more sharply as cards leave the shoe.
• Double deck — two decks, common both online and on land-based floors.
• Six deck — six standard decks shuffled together, the common configuration on many modern tables.

Casinos use multiple decks in part to reduce the effectiveness of card counting. Online, that is largely moot anyway: card distribution is random and the deck is reshuffled frequently, in many games after every single hand. That means the running count a counter would build never survives to the next hand, so counting does not translate to online blackjack the way it does to a land-based shoe. Basic strategy, on the other hand, works exactly as well here as anywhere, because it only ever depends on the hand in front of you and the dealer's up card.

A side bet is an optional wager placed alongside your main blackjack bet, paying out on specific card combinations rather than on whether you beat the dealer. They are separate wagers with their own odds, and they resolve independently of the hand.

Common examples you will encounter across live tables include Perfect Pairs, which wins if your first two cards form a pair; 21+3, which combines your first two cards with the dealer's up card to make a poker-style hand; Pair Plus, which pays on a pair among your opening cards; and various bonus bets that pay higher odds when rare combinations appear.

• Use chat the way you would speak at a table. Dealers respond to chat, and abuse gets you removed. Keep it civil.
• Do not coach other seats. Other players' decisions are theirs, and unsolicited advice about their play is the fastest way to sour a table.
• Know your bet before the window opens. Live rounds move at the dealer's pace, not yours.

If a table is full, piggyback or bet-behind lets you back another player's hand from outside the seat. Your wager then follows their decisions exactly, so choose the seat you are backing with some care — you are buying their judgment along with their cards.
